Using the correct email routing setting is critical for managing how emails are handled for your domain. Properly configuring this ensures that your emails are routed through the right mail server, especially if you have an external email service like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
How to set email routing in cPanel
1. First, login to cPanel
2. Navigate to the 'Email Routing' tool
3. Select your domain from the drop-down menu
4. Click 'Local Mail Exchanger' or 'Remote Mail Exchanger'
Which email routing setting to choose?
- Local Mail Exchanger
- Use this when your email is hosted locally, within the same cPanel
- The server will always accept mail for this domain. The system will deliver mail to the local mailbox.
- Remote Mail Exchanger
- Use this when your email is hosted externally such as Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
The server will not accept mail for this domain. The system sends all mail for this domain to the lowest-numbered mail exchanger (MX record).
