500 Internal Server Errors can be caused by a number of issues, which can normally be resolved with a bit of troubleshooting.

What to look for:

  • If you have made a recent change via FTP, try and undo those changes to see if that resolves the issue
  • Check the error_log in your “public_html” directory or login to cPanel and click “Error Log” to see if it mentions a specific error
  • Login to your FTP and check the size of your error_log file in the “public_html” directory. If it’s too large, delete it and see if that resolves the issue.

A Server 500 error will generally look something like this:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@domain.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
